Almost exclusively newcomers have been nominated for Best Supporting Actor, such as Ciarán Hinds, Troy Kotsur, Jesse Plemons and Kodi Smit-McPhee. Only Oscar winner JK Simmons has been in the race before.

There is a similar distribution among women.
