Orthopedics becomes a university, the first step towards the Medicine course. “A milestone”

Research and training as well as, of course, patient care. The Piacenza hospital does a step forward towards the Medicine and Surgery course with the ambition of becoming a polyclinic over the years. The Department of Orthopedics and Traumatology, from 1 March 2021, will become an additional seat of the University of Parma and, following a competition, the primary Pietro Maniscalco he was appointed full professor of the Parma university. The news was presented in a press videoconference.

Luca Baldino, general manager Ausl Piacenza: “From March 1st, Orthopedics is qualified to become a university ward. The operation is part of the project that will lead to the creation of the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery in Piacenza, connected to the University of Parma. It means that we will be able to open fronts on the side of research, training, we will be able to have more specialists and all the opportunities that the university world offers. I wanted to do this conference a year ago when we signed the first convention to turn a university-run ward into orthopedics but the pandemic broke out. However, the path has progressed and we are studying other opportunities for further departments even before reaching the Faculty of Medicine. I express enormous satisfaction with this first step and underline how this project is a fundamental operation to make our health care take a further leap “.
Patrizia Barbieri, mayor and president of the Province of Piacenza: “I thank the Ausl and the University of Parma for this great opportunity. The pandemic has not stopped the process of a strategic project for our territory as regards research, science and education. It is a very happy moment because it allows us to transmit concrete messages on the fact that Covid has not stopped Piacenza. It is an important stage for our health care ”.

Paolo Andrei, rector of the University of Parma: “It is a first step in the path that we have taken with conviction. A project that will lead to a state-of-the-art degree course in English, very important in the medical and health field and in line of continuity in the health professions. A first but fundamental piece, we talk about a further location because all the degree courses of Medicine and Surgery are set up with reference hospitals that up to now Parma has only built in the city. Speaking of “further headquarters” means that what happened in Parma can also happen in Piacenza. When we arrive at an advanced process throughout the hospital, the structure will become a polyclinic, meaning that patient care is integrated with research and training activities. It is a message of great hope for the whole country and for the region. This is a milestone, it is the first Operational Unit headed by Piacenza, therefore congratulations to Professor Maniscalco who passed the competition brilliantly, he will be the forerunner of an exciting project ”.

Professor Pietro Maniscalco, director of Orotpedia and Traumatology: “For me it is a dream that comes true thanks to the will of the general manager and the Rector. When they told me about the project two years ago, I thought there were so many obstacles that I never imagined could happen so quickly.
Thirty years ago I left Parma to go as a resident in Siena, I trained in Orthopedics and had the dream of becoming an ordinary. I succeeded here. On 5 July, during the pandemic, the competition for full professor was launched and I was very happy to be able to participate, we were three candidates. Now a new adventure in Orthopedics is born but the project is much wider and will become a flagship. We will have trainees who will be trained in the Piacenza area. At the moment there are already trainees from other locations. Working with young students can have contagious enthusiasm. The goal is to train doctors in Piacenza who could decide to stay in our city and this is an added value. We have to be competitive ”.
