Organic foodstuffs reached a market share of 10.3% for the first time in 2019. French-speaking Switzerland has overtaken German-speaking Switzerland.
“Organic continues to grow,” said director of Bio Suisse Balz Strasser on Wednesday during an online press conference. “We made further progress in almost all sectors and regions of Switzerland in 2019”.
With growth of 4.7%, French-speaking Switzerland was ahead of German-speaking Switzerland (3.1%) and reached a larger market share for the first time (10.5%, compared with 10.4% ). In Ticino, turnover increased by 1.3% to reach a market share of 8.9%. In five years, the turnover of organic products has increased from 2.2 to 3.2 billion francs.
Fresh products represent the largest market share, led by eggs (28.7%) followed by bread (26.1%) and vegetables (23.1%). Prepackaged products only reach 7.4%, but their growth is three times that of fresh products.
