Orange Women’s National Coach Andries Jonker: Redemption Against England After Belgium Defeat

NOS Voetbal•vandaag, 19:36

Jonker about clash with England: ‘We have to put something right after Belgium’

“If we want to qualify for the Nations League Finals, we have to beat England.” National coach Andries Jonker of the Orange Women does not mince words. After the 2-1 defeat against Belgium last Friday, the pressure is on for Jonker’s players. England comes to the Galgenwaard in Utrecht on Tuesday evening.

The match against World Cup finalist England is also a reunion with former Dutch national team coach Sarina Wiegman. Jonker is looking forward to it: “Sarina knows us like no other. The players and me. It will be a fight, we have to put something right after the defeat against Belgium.”

The Nations League is also a qualifying tournament for the Olympic Games. Captain Sherida Spitse is obviously not happy with the surprising defeat against Belgium, number eighteen in the world rankings (the Netherlands is eleven places higher), in the opening match. But she doesn’t think the Dutch team really played badly.

The Netherlands – England can be seen live on NPO3 on Tuesday evening from 7:30 PM. The match can also be followed live via the NOS app and on nos.nl.

“We had 70 to 80 percent ball possession against the Belgians. The ball often went to the same color. Even against Vietnam at the World Cup, that went less well.”

It is important for the Dutch team whether first goalkeeper Daphne van Domselaar is fit again. She, and second goalkeeper Lize Kop, both missed the match against the southern neighbors because they were not fit enough. As a result, Feyenoord goalkeeper Jacintha Weimar made her Dutch debut. An unfortunate first appearance, with a decisive error in injury time.
