Optimal Exercise Times: Finding Your Biorhythm for Productivity and Fitness

The key word is biorhythm. You can imagine this as a kind of internal clock that influences your sleep, for example. It is different for each person and is responsible for how fit you feel in the morning or evening, i.e. whether someone is a morning person, a night owl or more of an early bird. Our biorhythm determines how productive we are every day and at what times of the day we feel more or less motivated.

Muscles are also supposed to have a biorhythm – at least they have one US study by Northwestern University in Chicago found out. What that means? Our bodies react differently to training at different times of the day. For most people, the best time to train is during daylight, as that is often when performance is at its best. There is a reason for this: There are special proteins that keep the metabolism going when the oxygen level in the muscle cells drops during exercise. And these simply work more effectively when you are particularly awake. (Also interesting: Fitness tracker test 2023: tracking, comfort and features in comparison)

When to exercise? You should keep this in mind

In a study in the specialist magazine “Current Biology” Researchers recommend that it is best to follow your personal sleep-wake rhythm. This means that early risers train best during their lunch break, whereas late risers are advised to workout in the early evening hours. Gender is also said to play a role: While women seem to benefit more from workouts in the morning because they lose fat faster and build muscle better, an evening workout is said to be better for men’s blood pressure.
