Oppo imagines a pop-up camera on the side of the smartphone, because why not

In a patent, Oppo describes a smartphone whose pop-up camera is positioned on the side. A rather incongruous idea, it must be admitted.

Over the years, avoiding the unsightly notch on the front of their smartphone has become a matter of style for manufacturers. Some refine the notch to make a drop of water, others opt for a more or less discreet punch and some choose to hide the front camera so that it does not appear, using a motorized system, until it sought. This is often referred to as a “pop-up camera” and until now we used to see it on the top edge of the product.

Now, Oppo, in a patent granted by the National Intellectual Property Administration in China and spotted by TigerMobiles website, imagined a smartphone with a pop-up camera that would slide on the right side. This is a purely design-oriented document and we can therefore see some renderings (in one of this article) as well as diagrams illustrating the concept from several angles.

With this patent, Oppo simply wants to protect its idea in the event that it comes to light, there is nothing to confirm that such a smartphone will indeed be manufactured one day. Besides, we even wonder what need he would meet. Personally, I really wonder what the selling points of such a design would be.

I may never have answered this question. Oppo – with Xiaomi – is one of the brands that are working hard on an integration of the front photo sensor behind the screen in order to make it always invisible.
