Operated again, Federer ends his season

Roger Federer’s season is over. The Balois announced on networks that he had undergone a new operation on the right knee. “I am looking forward to seeing everyone on the circuit at the start of the 2021 season,” he said.

“I had to undergo a new arthroscopy on the right knee a few weeks ago, after having felt pain during my rehabilitation”, explains the world No. 4, who had to pass on the billiards in February.

“Now, as I did to approach the 2017 season, I plan to take all the time necessary to be 100% ready to evolve at my best level,” continues the Balois (39 years old on August 8) with reference to his left knee injury suffered in the summer of 2016 after Wimbledon.

The man with 20 Grand Slam titles, who had signed an extraordinary comeback by winning the 2017 Australian Open, will therefore only have played five official matches in 2020. Released in the semifinals in Melbourne by Novak Djokovic, he then faced Rafael Nadal in Cape Town in the Match for Africa before undergoing knee surgery.

In recent weeks, Federer had sent some negative signs about his recovery. In May, in an online chat with Gustavo Kuerten, he said well, “but I don’t see any reason to train again, knowing that we don’t know how long it will take before we get back to competition. ” Also, last Sunday, invited by the SRF, his trainer Severin Lüthi confirmed that the rehabilitation was not going “as fast as we had imagined.”

Roger Federer therefore has six months before him to prepare for the Australian Open, which could take place in circumstances that are necessarily particular in the context (quarantine envisaged for the players in particular). But the coronavirus crisis could well put all his colleagues and sisters of the ATP and WTA circuits in forced rest until next January.
