Shortly before the announcement of the list, two more applicants – Sajid Javid and Rehman Chishti – announced that they were refusing to participate. They did not receive sufficient support from the deputies.

On Wednesday, July 13, a vote will be held to reduce the number of applicants for the position. To advance, candidates will need to get the support of 30 deputies.

The number of contenders for the prime minister’s chair will be reduced until only two candidates remain. Then about 160,000 members of the Conservative Party will vote for one of the remaining two. The result will be announced on September 5, when Johnson leaves office.

Johnson said he would not publicly support any candidate because he did not want to hurt their chances.

As UNIAN reported, on July 7 Boris Johnson announced his resignation as British Prime Minister. Johnson also said he would remain in office until a new leader of the Conservative Party and head of government is elected.
