Jiří Veselý is the only one of four Czech tennis players to advance to the next round of this year’s Wimbledon and will now try to improve his participation last year against the Spanish opponent, who is Alexander Davidovich Fokina. Davidovich Fokina will be considered a slight favorite, however, the Czech number one has shown several times in the past that he is doing very well on the London grass.
The native of Příbram will celebrate his 29th birthday in less than fourteen days, and at the traditionally third grand slam of the season he reached the farthest in 2016 and 2018, where he even made it to the round of 16. He lost in the 2nd round last year, when he easily defeated Hanfmann in three sets, but then clashed a duel against the Hungarian rival Fucsovics. On Monday, he easily lost to Argentine Coriu in three sets. Veselý is currently in 68th place in the ATP rankings and this year he achieved his greatest success in Dubai, where he sensationally defeated Novak Djokovic and only succumbed to the Russian comet Rublev in the final.
Twenty-three-year-old Davidovich Fokina is currently in 37th place in the world rankings and this year he has improved his career maximum at Wimbledon. He achieved this last year when he got to the main stage for the first time, but he was not enough at the beginning after the five-hundred-strong battle for the American Denis Kudla. On Monday, he welcomed the favored Polish sock Hubert Hurkacz. For a long time, it seemed that he would beat the seed seven smoothly in three sets, as he even led 5: 3 in the third set, but in the end he significantly complicated the situation and advanced after five sets.
The two opponents have never competed before, so they will have their mutual premiere, given the performance of both players, we can rather expect a balanced course.
