OnePlus today unveiled the concept of one OnePlus 8T really special. At first glance it might seem the same smartphone, but there are some new aesthetics (and not only) that seek to precisely differentiate it from the crowd.

The company probably considered them at the time too immature, expensive to implement or not exactly ideal for the general public. The fact is that he decided to show her also, perhaps, to test the ground.

The design, according to OnePlus, is inspired by the colors of the water flowing in the hot springs of Pamukkale, Turkey. On the back we find the main peculiarity of the device: l’ECMF, acronym for “Electronic Color, Material and Finish”, a film that covers the back cover. This film changes color thanks to the metal oxide contained in the glass that covers the back cover. Basically when the metal oxide is “Active”, the color of the glass changes from a dark blue to a light silver. Here is a GIF showing the color change animation.

But such an iridescent coating it has no purely aesthetic purpose. For example, as OnePlus suggests, it might work from “Notification LED”, doing blinking colors to report an incoming call. At that point, gestures could be implemented to reject or accept calls with a gesture to be made in front of the camera.

Otherwise, as shown in the video below, it could even be used as a breathing monitor. By combining the ECMF with mmWave (a technology borrowed from the 5G), you can record a user’s breathing allowing the color to change in sync with the user, transforming the smartphone into a biofeedback device. Who knows if we will ever see this technology on a smartphone on the market!
