OnePlus CEO: our smartphones are becoming more expensive through 5g support – Tablets and phones – News

What is meant …

What they mean is that they now publish a reason / apology / spin so that they can sell a phone for more money than before and that market bears that.

Products are never sold on the basis of cost + x%, but on the basis of what the market can bear. If that margin is not there, a product is no longer made. But it is clear that given the prices of the top models Android and iOS smartphones, that the market can carry quite a bit.

The biggest issue here is that different industries are pushing technology like 5g like crazy to sell licenses, equipment, devices, etc. to a market where the majority of users don’t benefit from 5g.

Of course there are situations where it CAN be useful, but they are scarce and currently do not outweigh the costs that now a renewal entails. I see it a bit like the fuss of 20+ years ago about running out of ipv4 addresses, that took no more than 20 years before it actually happened and now not everyone is on ipv6!

news: Shortage of IP addresses in the near future
news: RIPE NCC has handed out its last ipv4 addresses

The state nicely agrees and auctions frequencies to the telecom operators for a ditch of cash for the state treasury every ten years.
