One of the oldest artists’ studios in the world will soon be renovated in Paris

It’s a part of history that will save the Mission Stéphane Bern. Created more than 150 years ago in the 15th arrondissement, theWorkshop 11 is one of oldest artist residences still active in the world. The site has been selected as one of eight Ile-de-France projects supported by the Heritage lotas such, it will benefit from an endowment for its renovation, it was learned on Monday 19 December 2022.

Soutine, Modigliani or Gauguin

Showcase for artists nestled in the 15th arrondissement of Paris, it has hosted Chaïm Soutine, Paul Gauguin and even Amedeo Modigliani, but after more than 150 years of activitythe premises have fallen into disuse.

Created in the late 19th century, Atelier 11 is today marked by cracks“the external and internal spaces are in a been worryingrequiring a major overhaul of the three-story structure,” notes the Foundation.

And specify that “many elements are original, in particular the typical shop windows” that make up a considerable cost of restoration. With the allocated amount, the facade will be restored “as close as possible to the iconographic sources in possession”.

105,000 euros to do what?

105,000 euros will therefore be donated to the Atelier. This amount will then make it possible to carry out a deep restoration.

The glass roof and the large windows overlooking the street and courtyard, which date back to the time of construction, need to be completely replaced due to warping and insulation reasons. The new windows will be made of steel, as thin as possible, in order to preserve the original design.

Heritage Foundation

The stairs and the mezzanine must be adjusted and leveled, the original structural beams will be restored. The construction is expected to start in spring 2023 and be completed by 2024.
