One in eight Dutch people bought from a rogue webshop | Money

This is apparent from research by credit card company ICS, the company behind the credit cards of ABN Amro, the ANWB and the Bijenkorf, among others.

Men appear to be more obstinate than women. They order twice as often a second time from an unreliable webshop.

Copy of real shop

The rogue webshops often look a lot like reliable webshops. “These kinds of web shops deliberately scam people by not delivering the products or by supplying fake products. The consumer often only notices this afterwards when products do not arrive or the webshop is unreachable,” says Duncan Macdonald, manager of the Chargeback department at ICS.

Young people between 18 and 24 also spend almost twice as much money at a rogue webshop than people over 24. “Rogue webshops often use very high discounts or branded stuff to lure customers, which is of course very interesting if you have a smaller budget or are a student,” explains Macdonald. “If a pair of Nike Air Max that normally cost €200 are suddenly offered for €50, there is a good chance that something is not right.”

In the summer months, the credit card company also sees many reports about air conditioning and fans. By paying online with a credit card, you can often get your money back if you bought from a rogue webshop. You can also often prevent a bad buy at a fake webshop by googling the webshop well in advance, and looking for experiences from other customers.
