Once destroyed by ISIS, the Grand Mosque of the 12th Century in Mosul will be rebuilt

MOSUL, KOMPAS.TV An Egyptian group of architects won the competition to build the Al-Nuri Grand Mosque in Mosul, Iraq.

The mosque from the 12th century was destroyed by ISIS in June 2017, when government forces moved to retake the city.

Three years before the destruction, ISIS leader Abu Bakar Al-Baghdadi proclaimed a caliphate in the mosque.

As quoted from BBC, the rebuilding of the Al-Nuri Mosque is part of the United Nations project of Rebuilding the Spirit of Mosul.

Eight Egyptian architects, with their Dialog Pages design were selected from 123 candidates.

“The rebuilding of the Al-Nuri Mosque will be an important event for the process of advancing the reconciliation of the war-torn city,” said the head of the UNESCO Cultural Agency, Audrey Azoulay.
