On the A27 motorway in the wrong direction, a Reyer Venezia player at the wheel

Terror at dawn today, Thursday 31 March, along the A27 motorway, on the Belluno-Venice route. A motorist, at the wheel of a Volkswagen Golf, traveled 40 kilometers in the wrong direction between the province of Venice and Conegliano, sowing panic among motorists and hauliers who found themselves crossing the vehicle traveling at high speed. Dozens of alert calls arrived at the emergency numbers of the police. It was the traffic police officers of the A27 detachment who stopped the vehicle in Conegliano, preventing it from continuing this crazy journey. Driving the vehicle was a Reyer Venezia player, Victor Sanders, a 27-year-old American, back from a good night spent in the Venetian. The foreigner got behind the wheel, probably altered by alcohol, entering the highway against the traffic, perhaps already at the height of the Venetian airport of Tessera. Fortunately, his mad rush stopped before the consequences of his gesture could be tragic. For him, in addition to the withdrawal of his license and a long string of fines, a complaint for drunk driving will also be triggered.

Victor Sanders, during the night, had already been blocked inside a room in Mestre, clearly in a state of alteration: the carabinieri had intervened in a bar around 3 o’clock, following a heated argument that had broken out between the 27-year-old and other clients, and they had identified him. As it was later rebuilt, he drove the car once he left the place. He headed towards the motorway and, probably at the junction between the A57 and the A27, took the carriageway in the opposite direction, following it northwards, up to Conegliano.

“I am an engineer and I was on my way to the airport for a business trip –says Fabio Poser, motorist direct witness of the episode– It was 5:15 am I was proceeding from Conegliano towards Venice. At the height of the curve that leads to the straight of the bridge over the Piave river, proceeding in the central lane, I saw six reflections coming from the overtaking lane. I swerved slightly to the right and this madman darted me to the left side. He proceeded in the fast lane at a speed that I can estimate around 120 km / h. I darted as well as the trucks that followed me. But he did not even hint at braking. I stopped and called 113. When I was warned of the fact when I reached the first luminous billboards in northern Treviso, I saw that a car in the wrong direction was signaled and motorists were ordered to stop on the right ».
