March 18 at At 19.00 on the public media portal LSM.lv and on the social networks of Latvian Television (LTV) there will be an online discussion “The Age of Emilija Benjamin”, in which the directors of the multi-series film “Emilija. The Queen of the Latvian Press” Andis Mizišs, Kristīne Želve and Dāvis Sīmanis will take part. The conversation will be moderated by Andriāna Roze, the film’s director and head of LTV Kulttuiņas.
The film “Emily. The Queen of the Latvian Press ”has gained a new context, expanding and deepening many of the themes revealed in the film. What are the traces left by the Benjamin family in modern Latvia? What does the image of a strong woman include? What does freedom of the press mean today? How much courage is it to call war a war? These and other topics in today’s context will be discussed in an online discussion, during which viewers will also have the opportunity to ask questions.
The discussion “The Age of Emilija Benjamin” will be moderated by the film director and the head of LTV Cultural News Adriana Roze, the films “Emilia. Queen of the Latvian Press ”directors Andis Mizišs, Kristīne Želve a Dāvis Sīmanis. The creative team of the discussion consists of the director Shake Cāne-Ķīle and editors Daira Āboliņa-Ilješāne.
The film “Emily. The Queen of the Latvian Press ”is a story about a strong woman who wants to be a leader not only in publishing, but also an influential lady in society. Emily became a symbol of women’s opportunities for many other young women of her time who had to conquer their place in the world of men. At the same time, Emilija Benjamin’s image shows that a woman is ready for anything if her family and relatives are endangered.
The occupation of Latvia destroyed Emilija Benjamin’s press empire and material well-being, but she still had a stiff back when the military confiscated her house and when she had to board a car with other repressed Latvians. She did not take the opportunity to emigrate to Sweden, although the sovereignty of the Latvian state was threatened.
