Ola Toivonen returns to Malmö FF | eleven years after transferring to PSV NOW

Ola Toivonen returns to Malmö FF eleven years after his transfer to PSV. The 33-year-old Swede was free after two seasons with Australia’s Melbourne Victory FC.

Toivonen signed for two years in Malmö. “I had to wait a long time, but it feels great to be here again,” said the attacker on the Swedish club’s site. “The desire to return has been around since the day I left and I have always followed the club.”

The 64-time international (14 goals) started his career with Degerfors and Örgryte, before reaching 17 goals in 51 league matches for Malmö FF between 2007 and 2009. That earned him a transfer to PSV, which paid about 4 million euros in January 2009.

Toivonen grew to captaincy in Eindhoven. He scored 61 goals in 139 Eredivisie matches for PSV, which after five years sold him to the French Stade Rennes. He also played for Sunderland and Toulouse.

“During his years abroad, Ola has always shown an interest in returning to Malmö,” said Malmö FF Technical Director Daniel Andersson. “Given the current situation, we do not have much financial space, but we have been able to conclude a good agreement.”

The Allsvenskan starts next Sunday, after the start of the Swedish league was delayed for more than two months by the corona crisis. Malmö FF will face its first game at home against Mjällby AIF the following Monday.
