Oksana Nikitjuka and Herta Hansen Concert: ‘Sunflower Path’

On February 25 at 3 p.m. in the chamber series “Personally” of the Liepāja Concert Hall, Ukrainian singer, conductor and musicologist Oksana Nikitjuka and Latvian pianist Herta Hansena will offer the Ukrainian and Latvian chamber music program “Sunflower Path” to the audience. The concert can be enjoyed both in person and live on the digital platform of the concert hall and on the YouTube channel, informed Anita Lazdeniece-Grīnberga, public relations specialist of “Lielā džintara”.

“Just like in Latvia, creative expressions of traditional culture and folk melodies were stifled and even banned in Ukraine for many years. It is natural that the composers wanted to preserve Ukrainian folk melodies and texts. In this contemporary version, we will hear not only melodies and rhythms, but also a folk song words. Philosophy and folk wisdom are hidden in them,” Oksana Nikityuk outlines the content of the program.

The life of Oksana Nikitjukas was changed by the war – currently she is a soloist of the State Academic Choir “Latvija”, has also performed with “Sinfonietta Rīga”, continues to give regular concerts in Ukraine and gradually includes the works of Latvian composers in her repertoire. It is closely related to the motto of the upcoming concert – the interaction of the past with the present opens the way to the future. Pain and liveliness, sharpness and tenderness.

Videos. Oksana Nikityuk and Herta Hansen present the program:

The first part of the concert will feature music by Ukrainian composers based on the oldest layers of folklore. Using the experience of Oksana Nikityukas as a lecturer and her excellent knowledge of Ukrainian music, the performances of the songs will be interspersed with a conversation between music reviewer, artistic director of the concert hall “Lielais dzintars” Orest Silabriež with Oksana about the little-known Ukrainian music culture, which has been overshadowed by Russian imperialism.

In the second part, a Latvian music program created for this concert will be played. Here, Oksana and Herta paid special attention to composers interested in folklore.

Characteristic of “Lielā dzintara” concert series “Personal” – after the concert in the gallery on the 2nd floor, concert-goers will be able to meet the musicians in an informal atmosphere to talk about their creative path, sources of inspiration and challenges.
