offers, CV, interview, applications… here are some tips for getting a job this summer

To work July – August, it’s time to get moving. In Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, the Youth Info Offices are currently organizing forums to connect employers who offer and young people who are looking. To put all the advantages on your side, here are some tips.

« Why am I coming to the youth employment forum? My parents sent me…” This is the kind of sentence to completely banish during an interview with a potential employer.

Many forums are organized to connect young people who want to work this summer and recruiters who are just looking for them… So, what are the things to say, to do, so as not to “screw up” your first date (almost) professional ? Charlène Pouzol-Bouvard, director of the Bureau Info Jeunes du Jura gives her expert advice. Even if they sometimes seem “obvious” to you, especially if you’re over 30 and you’re not looking for a job for this summer, some facts are always good to remember.

Preparing your forum means knowing how to present yourself orally in a few clear sentences : why am I coming, what are my availabilities, what job am I looking for, especially if a possible job is related to my studies. Examples: I want to work in tourism and thus exploit the foreign language(s) that I am learning or work in a personal service because I am doing a vocational baccalaureate in social careers. ·

Preparing your forum means coming with a CV, even if there isn’t much to write about! Even without any professional experience, given your age, this is normal, do not hesitate to point out that you are in a sports club and that you have participated in the organization of a lottery, or that you have given of your time for the Food Bank collection…Or insist (nicely, not too much anyway) on your innumerable qualities (innumerable according to your grandmother, but grannies always exaggerate a little, huh?), such as your senses contact and listening, organization.

The photo on the CV is good but not mandatory (“even if it looks more modern” according to Charlène Pouzol-Bouvard!). Warning: even if in the job in question, you will have no opportunity to demonstrate that you are the future Prix Goncourt, take care with the spelling of your CV. ·

Preparing your forum also means taking care of your look! no need to dress like for your big brother’s wedding but, all the same, scruffy outfit strongly discouraged! Be careful, here too, as with other relationships, you see what I mean, the first impression is often the right one. The director of BIJ Jura advises “ a neutral outfit, that is to say, a bit all-purpose ».

And the interview?

All this advice is to prepare the forum, once in front of your (future) employer, do not hesitate to ask him questions in particular about the position he is offering, the qualities necessary to fulfill these missions, and in general on the company. In short, be interested. ·

Even if this interview is only “for a summer job”, put all the assets on your side. You’re not gambling with your life, but it’s still the first step into the real world of work. It will always be, for the interview or the job, an experience. ·

Last thing: Charlène Pouzol-Bouvard specifies that some employers prefer to “fill” the two summer months with the same young person. Yes, even after two or three weeks, you will see, you will already be almost “competent”. Or at least already “trained” and almost operational… So think about it: between two months or nothing, what do you choose?

Not to be excluded: the good old spontaneous application. Same story: submit your CV and cover letter in person to the company. Or send by e-mail with a difficulty: making sure to “target” the right person, that is to say the company manager or the human resources manager. If all of this advice seems really “brain-crunching” to you, think about all the money you’re going to earn in July – August, and how you’re going to spend it… Too good!
