Offenburg: Ortenaukreis continues to invest in bicycle mobility – Participation in the Southern Ortenau – Northern Breisgau cycle traffic master plan decided by the Southern Upper Rhine regional association

The district of Ortenau is involved in the creation of a master plan for cycling in southern Ortenau / northern Breisgau. At its meeting last Thursday (March 24th, 2022), the Committee for the Environment and Technology unanimously approved a contribution of 37,000 euros for the cross-district project, which the regional association Südlicher Oberrhein is responsible for.

“I consider cycling to be a central component of sustainable and environmentally friendly mobility and a cornerstone of the traffic turnaround,” says Michael Loritz, head of the transport department in the district of Ortenau. “Solutions should be developed with the master plan for cycling that do not stop at the municipal or district borders. This is particularly important for the southern Ortenau / northern Breisgau region in order to meet the special challenges for cycling here.”

According to cycling traffic coordinator Luise Markert, these challenges include better connection of towns and communities and Europa-Park to the planned Lahr-Emmendingen cycle expressway, closing gaps in the cycling network, better signposting of tourist cycle routes and the Baden-Württemberg cycle network, more traffic safety in school transport, a better links to public transport and increased promotion of cycling. “Here, directly on the border with France, both commuters and tourists travel between the countries, so another focus should be on improving cross-border cycling,” says Markert.

At a kick-off event in October 2021, the project partners defined the thematic and organizational framework of the project. “In the meantime, the regional association has put the planning services out to tender through an external specialist office. After deducting the expected funding from the “Qualified Specialist Concepts” program of the state of Baden-Württemberg and after dividing the costs among the project partners, the Ortenaukreis’s share of the financing is 37 percent,” says Markert.

The project area of the Southern Ortenau/Northern Breisgau cycle traffic master plan is the area of the southern Ortenau district and the northern district of Emmendingen in the Rhine plain with the following participating cities and communities: Ettenheim, Herbolzheim, Kappel-Grafenhausen, Mahlberg, Ringsheim, Rheinhausen and Rust. Other project partners are the regional council of Freiburg, the regional association of the southern Upper Rhine, the district of Ortenau, the district of Emmendingen and Europa-Park Rust.
