WHO: The world is doing too little in the fight against tuberculosis

news-source="dpa-afx">

GENEVA (dpa-AFX) – According to the World Health Organization (WHO), too little is being done worldwide to fight tuberculosis. Tuberculosis (TB) is to be defeated by 2030. By 2022, at least 30 million people should be given preventive care because of the risk of infection, including four million children. The balance is sobering, as the WHO writes on World Tuberculosis Day (March 24). Today, only a fraction of the people who needed this received life-saving medication. In 2018 there were only 2.2 million. Only a quarter of the children under the age of five in families where someone lives with TB had been treated.

Despite the crisis caused by the new Sars-CoV-2 coronavirus, which can trigger Covid-19 lung disease, the world must continue to do everything possible to defeat tuberculosis, said WHO Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus. “Millions of people need to be able to take preventive medication to prevent the onset of the disease, prevent suffering, and save lives.” / Oe / DP / jha
