Off-White x Air Jordan 1 ‘Chicago’ Sold For Astronomical Price After Virgil Abloh’s Death

While the fashion world is still reeling from the shock after the unexpected passing of Virgil Abloh, his legacy is taking on even more potent value. Not only with regard to his collections for Louis Vuitton and his signature Off-White, but also for capsule collections with other brands. The example that is attracting the most attention is in the Off-White x Air Jordan 1 ‘Chicago’, a model of sneakers that, since its creation in 2017 already delighted collectors, has now come to be considered a true relic.

This association took place in 2017, when it reinterpreted some of the most emblematic designs – specifically 50 – of the sports brand in the collection ‘The Ten’ that were even exhibited in the Metropolitan Museum in New York and among those that appear from Air Force 1 to Air Presto or Air Max 97.

Of all of them, the most popular were the Air Jordan 1 ‘Chicago’ that initially sold for 190 euros and that in the blink of an eye were revalued until reaching up to 9.000 euros on platforms like Ebay o Stock X. However, after his sudden demise the price has risen to as low as 140.000 euros, a figure that for many may seem exorbitant and that highlights the importance that you can acquire this type of item in the market in a matter of hours.

As explained in Stock X, some of the details offered by this reinterpretation is the ’85’ -year of its creation- written on the inside of the ankle, the midsoles with the inscription ‘AIR’, the laces with the message ‘SHOELEACES’ and the multiple zippers that became very significant elements of the designer.

A little history

Although the Air Force 1, and the Air Max are among the most iconic of Nike, the Air Jordan is a world reference since it was the first collaboration between an athlete and a footwear brand 36 years ago -when Michael Jordan played for the Chicago Bulls- which later opened the ban on a new business model between streetwear firms and celebrities of all kinds. The term “Air Jordan” was coined by Michael Jordan’s agent, David Falk, because Nike shoes had air in the soles and also much of Jordan’s “magic” in basketball resided in his pirouettes in the air.

Today this model invoices an average of $ 3 billion a year, there is nothing. Another point, according to a study carried out by Yahoo, the most “instagrammed” sneakers are the Nike Air Max, the Nike Air Jordan, the Nike Air Force 1 and the Adidas Yeezy.
