Support for Swiss farmers cost the Confederation 6.1 billion francs in 2019. This is 600 million francs more than the previous year. In the years 1986-88, this amount rose to 6.8 billion francs. However, as a percentage of total aid to agriculture, its share increased from 80% to 50% over this period. Despite the decline, Swiss agricultural subsidies – 1% of gross national product (GDP) – remain three times higher than the OECD average. Overall between 2017 and 2019, they represented 49% of peasant income.
