Odin’s parents on closure: – Now we are left unanswered

SATISFIED: Dan Yngve Jacobsen and Ingunn Hagen have not decided whether to appeal the decision to the Attorney General.

The case was dropped by prosecutors on Wednesday. Odin’s parents think this is the wrong decision.

Odin André Hagen Jacobsen has been missing for over four years. Now the Trøndelag state prosecutors have dropped the case.

– Obviously we are disappointed and do not agree.

That’s what Odin’s father Dan Yngve Jacobsen told VG after the close it became known Wednesday morning.

The case was dismissed as not a criminal offence. The prosecutor writes in a news release Wednesday that the most likely course of events is that Odin ended up in the sea.

– We were hoping to get answers about what happened to Odin. We are now left without an answer. Police concluded that he drowned, but we find no support for this in the investigative materials, says Odin’s father Dan Yngve Jacobsen.

Not surprised

Dan Yngve and Ingunn were notified of the closure of the prosecutor’s office at 10am on Wednesday. On Wednesday afternoon they read most of the documents, but not all.

The closing was as expected.

– We learned two days ago that there would be a decision. None of us were surprised by the decision, even though we hoped for a different outcome. We may never know what happened to Odin, Ingunn says.

The parents cannot agree with the police theories. They feel that the police have decided on a theory and, to a small extent, followed other leads.

– We can’t deny that he ended up in the water, but there have been several clues that have pointed in other directions. Some have been investigated, while there is little interest in other tracks. It seems that the police were determined to get Odin into the water. For us, many unanswered questions remain, says Mother Ingunn.

The last sure observation shows Odin descending from Pir II in the direction of the mouth of the Nidelven and towards the Trondheimsfjord.

After he takes the last step out of the picture at the port, no one knows what happened to him.

Days later, several of Odin’s belongings, which fit, are found in the harbor.

– When they don’t have results that support the theory, it makes the situation very difficult for us parents in a big grieving process. It’s a big stress that we don’t know what happened to him. When the police have been unable to justify their hypothesis and present results that support it, we are left with many doubts and many unanswered questions, Ingunn explains.

The State Attorney: can appeal

Ingunn and Dan Yngve do not believe that the prosecutor listened to their input. They themselves have given several messages on the assumptions of the police.

– It is frustrating for us that the police close the investigation. We had hoped for a more independent decision by the prosecutor. We’ve provided a lot of input and corrections to police assumptions. They paid little attention to this, the parents conclude.

State attorney Kaia Strandfjord tells VG that Odin most likely ended up in the water. If parents want to complain about the suspension, they also have the option to do so.

– We consider it very likely that Odin ended up in the water. He left artifacts on Pir II, which is where he was last seen. Even Odin was alone before being in Brattørkaia. If the parents wish, they can file a complaint with the Attorney General. They can present their criticisms there, he says.

TO The newspaper Strandfjord points out that suggestions that it might have had something to do with this have been checked.

– Suggestions that had a certain quality did not lead, but were dealt with. We cannot say anything about what happened, nor draw any conclusions about it. But most likely it ended up in the sea.

As of now, Odin’s parents have not decided whether to appeal the decision to the Attorney General.
