NYC Mayor Meets With ‘Drill’ Rappers, Promises Solutions to Gun Violence – NBC4 New York

New York City Mayor Eric Adams blamed the “drill” rap genre for contributing to the city’s sharp rise in violence this year, and Tuesday night he met with some of those rappers to talk about solutions to the problem.

Adams previously said he wanted to meet with prominent rappers to talk about gun violence on the city’s streets. As of last Sunday, shootings so far this year are up 37% compared to the same period in 2021: an average of nearly 4 people shot every day.

A video posted to Instagram by Brooklyn rapper Maino shows the mayor in a city hall office, meeting with more than a dozen men. Maino indicated that he was recording at 11:30 pm on Tuesday.

“A lot has been said about drill rap, drill music in New York City, connecting violence with culture, and I just wanted to create a conversation with the mayor,” said Maino. Artists such as Fivio Foreign, B-Lovee, CEO Slow, Bucksy Luciano and Bleezy also joined the gathering. .

Later in the video, Adams promises “let’s release something together” in response to the conversation.

What is Drill Rap?

Drill came out of Chicago in the last decade and is generally characterized by haunting songs with heavy lyrics about violence, gunfights and the like.

Two up-and-coming piercing artists, Tdott Woo and Chii Wittz, were killed in Brooklyn this month.
