“Nvidia is in advanced talks with SoftBank about taking over Arm” – IT Pro – News

Nvidia is reportedly in advanced talks with SoftBank regarding the acquisition of Arm. GPU manufacturer Nvidia is said to be the only serious bidder at the moment and has more than 27 billion euros left for chip designer Arm.

According to financial news agency Bloomberg the parties want to reach a deal in the coming weeks. Already went last week the rumor that Nvidia wants to take over Arm; now sources say the conversations are advanced. The British chip designer is currently owned by Japan’s SoftBank.

Bloomberg sources also note that no decisions have yet been made and negotiations can still stall. SoftBank could still gauge the interest of other interested parties if it is not possible to reach a deal with Nvidia.

Also sources from the Financial Times provide details about the takeover calls. They say that the conversations have started in recent months and that Nvidia approached SoftBank. According to FT’s sources, there are still a number of issues surrounding the deal that need to be resolved.

The amount involved in the acquisition is not yet known. Nvidia would like to pay more than the £ 24.3 billion that SoftBank deposited in 2016 to get Arm in its hands. That is currently about 27 billion euros. Nvidia, SoftBank and Arm did not respond to the reports.

If Nvidia actually plans to acquire Arm, that acquisition is likely to come under magnifying glass from regulatory and competition authorities. Nvidia and Arm are active in the same industry and Nvidia is currently an Arm customer. Many companies currently rely on the licenses they purchase from Arm to make chips.
