Compared to three weeks ago, three times as many Spaniards are infected with the coronavirus, according to data from the Spanish Ministry of Health on Monday.
Currently, 27 out of 100,000 Spaniards are infected with the coronavirus, according to the Spanish Ministry of Health. At the end of June this was ‘only’ 8 out of 100,000.
The corona virus was under control in Spain for some time, but since the stringent measures in the country were relaxed in late June, some 201 new local outbreaks have been identified. Keeping the virus under control is particularly difficult in the regions of Catalonia and Aragon.
“The new outbreaks are happening where the rules have been relaxed,” Spanish Health Minister Salvador Illa said Monday. “For example at family gatherings or in the nightlife.”
More and more regions are requiring face masks
Illa calls the situation in Catalonia worrying and calls on the inhabitants to respect the corona measures. On Saturday, local authorities in Catalonia reported 1,226 new infections from the day before.
The Catalan government is asking four million residents of the Barcelona region to stay at home as much as possible in the next two weeks. It is also not recommended to meet with more than ten people.
To avoid outbreaks, most Spanish regions have now made face masks mandatory, even in situations where social distancing can be guaranteed. This is the case on the popular holiday islands of Mallorca and Ibiza. In the provinces of Castellón, Valencia and Alicante, wearing a face mask in public space is also mandatory, even if you can keep a distance of 1.5 meters.
In total, 264,836 people in Spain have now been infected with the corona virus. 4,581 new infections were registered last weekend. More than 28,000 people have died from the effects of the virus.
