Number of infections among students has doubled in the past two weeks, “fortunately we are a bit over the top”

The general director of the Vrij CLB Network Stefan Grielens notes that the number of infections in primary schools is still at a peak that has been unprecedented in the past eighteen months, but he also sees “bright spots”.

“The numbers are rising quite as we expected. We have also seen that in the wider society. The numbers are very high, but luckily the numbers in the schools are evolving just like in society and they are over the top. We see a stabilization and the decline has started,” says Grielens.

According to Grielens, it seems that the peak in the schools has been reached. “The turnaround has started. The figures for the second week of the past two weeks are clearly lower than in the first week. We see that among both students and teachers. We think that the measures taken in the wider society also have their effect on the contamination rates in education. Those are communicating vessels as it has been from the start of the pandemic.”

Most infections appear in primary schools. “That has to do with the fact that this is the group of children who have not been vaccinated. Fortunately, the children do not get too sick from it.”
