The train, which was headed to East Palestine, experienced multiple issues before its derailment in early February. Surveillance videos captured along the route leading to East Palestine revealed that there was visible fire beneath the train long before the derailment occurred.

In an effort to shed light on the incident, the NTSB has released nearly 5,000 pages of records detailing their investigation into the East Palestine derailment. These records include summaries prepared by investigators, technical reports, interview transcripts, and photographs.

During the investigation, East Palestine Fire Chief Keith Drabick revealed that he made the decision to vent and burn the hazardous vinyl chloride gas on the derailed train.
