1879 American Jade RITTY, in order to put an end to the theft of bartenders in his saloon in the city of Dayton, patented the world’s first cash register. In the first model, each trading operation was recorded on disk. Later, a special indicator appeared that allowed both the cashier and the buyer to see the cost of the purchase. Once the indicator began to show the amount that the seller had to put in the cash drawer, the temptation to hide anything became much less. Ritti also came up with a device that recorded every monetary transaction on a paper roll. From now on, the owner could check the amount of cash in the cash register with the amount indicated on the roll and find out exactly how many purchases were made per day.

1890 The world’s first underground electric road, the metro, opened in London. The Prince of Wales, future King EDWARD VII of Great Britain, opened the metro and became its first passenger. The first line, 6 kilometers long, was called the Metropolitan Railway, that is, “metropolitan railway.” The reduction of this long name to five letters gave rise to the familiar “metro” to all of us.
