WARSAW – Serbian tennis player Novak Djokovic was declared European Sportsman of the Year 2023 in a vote by the press agencies of the “old continent”. The traditional survey is organized by the Polish PAP, and 21 sports editors from news agencies, including the Press Agency of the Slovak Republic (TASR), presented their top 10 for the 66th edition.

Djokovic won the PAP poll for the fifth time in history, tying Swiss tennis player Roger Federer’s record. He had already succeeded in 2011, 2015, 2018 and 2021. He triumphed with 178 points, followed by the Dutch Formula 1 champion Max Verstappen in second place with a distance of 28 points, and the world pole vault champion Swede Armand Duplantis finished third.

A total of 62 athletes from 23 countries received votes in the poll. Slovak skier Petra Vlhová also received two points and shared 53rd place. Last year, Polish tennis player Iga Swiateková won the poll for the first time and this time finished in sixth place. Eight names on the TASR ballot also made the top ten.

Djokovic, 36, has had another extremely successful year. He finished the season as world number one for the eighth time in his career, improving his own record. The Serbian has won three Grand Slam trophies this year, failing to find a winner at the Australian Open, Roland Garros and even the US Open.

In the Wimbledon final, he lost to Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz only after a five-set battle. Leading the list for the number of Grand Slam titles, he reached number 24. At the end of the season, he won his seventh triumph at the prestigious tournament of champions, which no one before him in history had achieved.

The 66th edition of the PAP agency survey for the European sportsman of the year: 1. Novak Djokovic (Serbia/tennis) 178 points, 2. Max Verstappen (Netherlands/F1) 150, 3.
