Nova Scotia: end of the run for man suspected of wanting to kill a police officer

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) spared no efforts to arrest Tobias Doucette, the man who allegedly stabbed a police officer in Bridgewater, Nova Scotia, on Sunday almost a week ago.

Following a call for an attempted vehicle theft after midnight, a police dog dispatched to the scene quickly sniffed out a trail.

“Dozens of police were brought into the area to help establish a perimeter. Within an hour, the RCMP and Bridgewater Police Department mobilized 18 police vehicles identified in the area between Highway 3 in Hebbville and Conquerall Mills Road. We erected a security perimeter and prevented all vehicles from entering the search area, ”said the RCMP in a statement detailing the arrest.

With the participation of the RCMP’s national and provincial task forces as well as the support of the RCMP Air Services in Moncton, New Brunswick, the suspect was apprehended peacefully shortly before 1 a.m. Tobias Doucette had been spotted shortly before by thermal detectors of the RCMP air services.

“He was transported to the Cookville RCMP cell block, where emergency medical services provided treatment,” RCMP said.

He will have to appear in Provincial Court in Bridgewater for attempted murder, aggravated assault, assault with a weapon, assault, injuring a law enforcement animal, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose (x2), mischief under $ 5,000 and motor vehicle theft. His court date has not yet been set.

The 31-year-old man is suspected of assaulting a police officer called to intervene in a domestic violence case on Monday evening.

The victim, Sergeant Matthew Bennett, is out of danger, as is the wife, the common-law partner of the alleged assailant who also attacked a police dog. The animal is said to be in stable condition.

The arrest of the Cape Breton man thus puts an end to a run that lasted almost a week.
