Not Just Breathing, UGM Experts Say Covid-19 Can Attack Digestion

Yogyakarta: Professor of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (FKH) Gadjah Mada University (UGM) Wasito said that Covid-19 would continue to experience mutations, giving rise to new variants such as the Delta and Omicron variants. The mutation of the virus can occur in all countries where Covid-19 has been detected.

According to him, the virus that originated from bats has undergone thousands of mutations in the bat’s body, so that it can be transmitted to humans and is now between humans.

“In bats, mutations occur repeatedly so that in the past they could cause Sars and Mers. Currently we are still looking for why mutations can occur repeatedly up to thousands of times in blood circulation and in bat tissue cells which is still a mystery, but not all bats have corona, ” said Wasito, citing a UGM press release, Tuesday, November 30, 2021.

In contrast to the research he has conducted since 1988 on coronavirus In large livestock, poultry and small animals, Wasito said that initially this virus was not transmitted to humans. However, after experiencing many mutations in bats, it was finally able to be transmitted to humans.

Even so, he said, the symptoms caused by animals infected with coronavirus generally attack the respiratory tract. However, not a few also attack the digestive tract in animals.

Symptoms of being exposed to COVID-19 in humans, which mostly attack the respiratory tract, include coughs and runny noses to respiratory disorders. He suspects that it is possible for the corona virus to attack the digestive tract with the appearance of acute diarrhea, as happens in animals exposed to the coronavirus.

“Now it’s through breathing, but it could be through feces later because of diarrhea. I’ve suspected for a long time,” he said.

Since researching coronavirus in animals for 33 years, Wasito said that the size of this virus is very small, namely 0.1 microns so that it can penetrate masks worn by humans. He advised more people to keep a distance of at least 2 meters so as not to get infected.

“It’s useless if we wear masks but the distance is still close and touching because the small size of this virus can go in and out of masks,” he said.

In addition, the penetration ability of COVID-19 is very high when the body is experiencing panic or stress. “Avoid stress by not being surprised or shocked, while maintaining the 6M, 3T, a conducive environment and always taking vitamin supplements,” he said.
