Settlers fans who were disappointed with The Settlers: New Allies will remember the atmosphere of the iconic installments of the series while playing Northgard. This excellent Nordic RTS is currently available for cheap on Steam and GOG.

This year’s The Settlers: New Allies turned out to be an average game at best. In search of successful spiritual successors to this cult series, fans must therefore go back to the recent past. They will find there e.g. Northgard – an excellent real-time strategy set in a fantasy world inspired by Norse mythology.

This work by Shiro Games was released in 2018, but it regularly receives new additions – the last one, introducing the Ermine Clan, was released last week. Nevertheless, players evaluate Northgard very positively, not only because of the developer’s long-term support. First of all, it is a great strategy, next to which fans of the cult “The Settlers” should not pass by indifferently.

However, this does not mean that Northgard is dot to dot The Settlers. Adam Zechenter, who dubbed the game “Settlers of the 21st Century” in his review, said it was accurate because:

[…] The creators focused not on recreating classic strategies from years ago, but on the feelings that accompanied us while dealing with them. This is how the production was created, which – although new in form and nothing like the classics – entertains in a similar way to hits from years ago. It took me a dozen or so springs back, and it’s a nice journey that won’t end soon.

Admittedly, this is not a historically low price – about a year ago the production in question it was possible buy on Steam and GOG for PLN 26.99 – but the content of the game certainly justifies it. Northgard offers quite an interesting, several-hour story campaign. At the same time, it can only be considered as an introduction to playing online (or with AI) in the skirmish mode.

In these, you can manage many different clans, and if someone decides that there are not enough of them, the next ones – like the above-mentioned Ermine Clan – can buy as DLCwhich were also promoted. It is also worth mentioning that the game received the Cross of Vidar expansion, introducing a new story campaign. From player reviews on Steam however, it appears that this extension is full of bugs.

Another thing is the “stand” – this one is mainly described in superlatives. This translated to “very positive” game reviews on Valve’s platform – the favorable ones account for 88% of over 55,000. all reviews posted. Fans praise the relative simplicity of the production – which, however, does not diminish the challenge for RTS fans who crave it – as well as the possibility of achieving victory in various ways or the charming audiovisual setting.
