NEW YORK, N.Y. — Big dreams for North Park women’s volleyball did not come to fruition in their trip to the Big Apple on Saturday as the Vikings were unable to corral the No. 4 ranked Northwestern (MN) Eagles or the No. 10 ranked New York University Violets, falling 3-1 and 3-0, respectively.

Northwestern Recap

The Vikings started the match strong winning set one in extra play, 26-24. They were unable to use this momentum and lost the next three sets with scores of 25-20, 25-12, 25-17.

The Vikings were still able to lead in aces (8-10) and digs (64-61).

Junior outside hitter Adriana Rodriguez led the team with 13 kills, followed by junior middle blocker Shamyia Collier and junior opposite hitter Kharlie Simeona-French with 10 and 7, respectively. Freshman middle blocker Meg Rothermel had a pair of blocks.

Senior setter Christina Gatta put up her 16th 30+ assist game of the season with 33 in this match. This is good for a CCIW best 742 assists on the season. Sophomore libero Carolina Aviles recorded 15 digs followed by Rodriguez and Gatta with 14 and 10 each.

Northwestern’s Kiera Brown led the match with five blocks while Abby Glanzer had 20 kills.

New York Recap

Against the Violets, North Park never fully found their groove. New York held the Vikings to a .076 hitting percentage, their lowest of the season, thanks to nine blocks from the Violets to earn a straight set win.

North Park showed gumption in the third set, at one point capturing a 12-5 lead thanks to quality serving, including a pair of aces, from Aviles, that forced quick timeouts from the Violets. However, NYU scored 11 of the next 12 points to steal the momentum back. That was the last straw, as they ran away with a 25-19 third set win and a sweeping victory over the Vikings.

Junior outside hitter Adriana Rodriguez led the team with eight kills, followed by by junior middle blocker Shamyia Collier and junior opposite hitter Kharlie Simeona-French with 7 and 4, respectively.

Senior setter Christina Gatta records three aces followed by two from sophomore libero Carolina Aviles. Gatta also led the Vikings in assists (20) and digs (19).

NYU’s Leela Anvekar had six blocks while Haley Holz led all players with 12 kills.
