North Korea has successfully tested a new type of long-range cruise missile, Reuters reported, citing the Korean Central Telegraph Agency (CCTA).
The test shots were fired over the weekend. The missiles flew 1,500 kilometers in 7,580 seconds before hitting their targets and landed in North Korean territorial waters.
Yonhap news agency reported, citing KCTA, that the tests of the new type of cruise missiles were carried out after two years of research, KCTA notes.
Their exact characteristics are not specified due to secrecy.
“The development of this weapons system, which is being promoted under the special attention of the party’s Central Committee, is of strategic importance, as it is another effective deterrent that allows us to reliably ensure the security of our country,” the CCTA said. that the new missiles are “a strategic weapon that is extremely important.”
In August, North Korea cut ties with South Korea in response to joint military maneuvers with the United States. Pyongyang called the exercise “madness” and a rehearsal for an invasion of the North, while South Korean President Moon Jae-in was accused of “treason.”
On September 9, two days before the missile tests, a military parade was held in Pyongyang to mark the anniversary of the founding of the DPRK. The roar of fighter jet engines was heard in the North Korean capital.
According to the annual report of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the DPRK may resume operation of the plutonium production reactor in Yongbyon.
