Stomach Virus “Norovirus” Spreads Across Northeast United States

Region Experiences High Number of Positive Cases

A stomach virus known as the “norovirus” is rapidly spreading across the Northeast region of the United States, according to the latest data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

A recent analysis of the three-week average shows that the positive tests for norovirus in the region have reached a concerning 13.9 percent. The positive rate has consistently remained above 10 percent since mid-December 2023.

Not Limited to the Northeast

While the Northeast region is currently reporting a high number of positive norovirus cases, recent data published by the CDC shows that other regions have also been affected. The South has reported a positive rate of 9.5 percent, the Midwest has hovered around 10 percent, and the West has observed a rate of approximately 12 percent.

Leading Cause of Foodborne Illness

According to the CDC, norovirus is the primary cause of vomiting, diarrhea, and foodborne illness in the United States. This highly contagious virus spreads very easily and rapidly.

Individuals of all age groups are susceptible to infection, and it is important to note that contracting one type of norovirus does not guarantee protection against other types of the virus.

While certain types of norovirus may confer some level of immunity, the duration of protection is currently unknown.

Seasonal Outbreaks and Symptoms

Outbreaks of norovirus predominantly occur during late fall, winter, and early spring. In addition to vomiting and diarrhea, individuals infected with norovirus may experience symptoms such as fever, headache, dehydration, and body aches.

Prevention Measures

The CDC strongly recommends following preventive measures to mitigate the spread of norovirus. These measures include:

  • Thoroughly washing hands with soap and water.
  • Cleaning and disinfecting surfaces using bleach.
  • Using hot water to wash and sanitize laundry.

Significant Burden on Public Health

Annually, norovirus is responsible for an estimated 19 to 21 million illnesses in the United States. The majority of these cases occur from November to April.

The illness leads to approximately 109,000 hospitalizations and 900 deaths each year, with older adults being the most vulnerable, as reported by the CDC.

These alarming statistics highlight the urgent need for increased awareness, preventive measures, and research in battling the norovirus and protecting public health.
