Non-Mesocyclonic Tornado Forms in Budapest Area Amidst Heavy Thunderstorms

June 6, 2023 – 10:37 p.m

By Tuesday evening, another wave of thunderstorms reached the Budapest area. In Óbuda, above Aranyhegy, around 8:15 p.m., a non-mesocyclonic tornado formed from one of the thunderclouds – the phenomenon was reported by the Time picture.

Such tornadoes are characterized by the fact that they are not usually associated with supercells, in contrast to mesocyclonic tornadoes.

As we wrote earlier, heavy downpours developed in several parts of the country from Tuesday afternoon. The European Storm Forecast Experiment (ESTOFEX), Europe’s leading storm warning organization, has also issued a level two warning for Transdanubia. Since dawn, more than 60 millimeters of rain has already fallen on Piszkéstetó in Mátra, which is almost the monthly average for June.

We can also expect frequent showers and thunderstorms in the coming days.
