Representative Noh Woong-rae, a four-term senior member of the Democratic Party of Korea who went on a hunger strike in protest against exclusion from nomination, announced on the 10th that he would not run in the general election. However, he said, “If we lose the general election due to the leadership’s arbitrariness in nomination, the leadership will definitely have to take responsibility.”

Rep. Roh posted on social media this morning, saying, “I will follow the party’s decision and not run in this general election,” and “I will take the lead in creating a Democratic Party worthy of the Democratic Party.” He accepted being excluded from the Gap nomination in Mapo-gu, Seoul, which is his local district, and said he would not run as an independent candidate or withdraw from the party.

Rep. Roh was effectively excluded from the nomination on the 22nd of last month when the Democratic Party’s Nomination Management Committee designated Mapo-gap as a ‘strategic constituency’ where the Strategic Nomination Management Committee decides who to nominate. Rep. Noh, who is on trial for bribery, immediately went on a hunger strike in the Democratic Party representative conference room, claiming, “I am not the only one being tried for bribery, but it is a clear rubber band that I am the only one in a strategic area.” His fast continued until the 2nd of this month, and in the meantime, the Democratic Party leadership moved the meeting hall to another location and held a meeting. Former police officer Lee Ji-eun, a talent recruited by the Democratic Party, was strategically nominated in Mapo-gap.

In his article, Rep. Roh said, “I even went on a hunger strike to straighten out the party leadership’s unfair and opaque nomination system. “This was because during the nomination screening process, we had to prevent a situation in which our party’s boasted ‘system nomination’ was misused as a means of private election and resulted in defeat in the general election,” he said. He continued, “Nevertheless, now we must unite our strength for the greater cause of judging the dictatorship of Prosecutor Yoon Seok-yeol,” and added, “We will protect the party and add our strength to judging Yoon Seok-yeol’s regime through victory in the general election.”

Rep. Roh emphasized, “The people are seriously worried about the Democratic Party’s transformation into a private party and factional and gang politics,” and added, “If the leadership loses the general election due to the leadership’s arbitrariness in nominations and incorrect perception of the situation, the leadership will definitely have to take responsibility.”
