In Italy, the disintegrated coalition will not restart. After days of negotiations, former Prime Minister Matteo Renzi said the political differences between his little Italia Viva and other parties are unbridgeable.
President Sergio Mattarela had given the parties until today to see if they could form a new government. Now he is calling on parliament to quickly support a new cabinet that could lead the country through the corona crisis.
Another option is to call early parliamentary elections, but according to Mattarella, the health, economic and social crises call for a strong government to emerge soon.
Dissatisfied
Mattarela has invited former president of the European Central Bank (ECB) Mario Draghi to come and talk tomorrow about whether he wants to lead a business cabinet or a ‘cabinet of national unity’.
