No houseboats but floating ‘harbor lofts’ in Rotterdam | Inland

It concerns a total of six so-called harbor lofts, which were brought from a construction site in Rotterdam-East over the Nieuwe Maas to a permanent new home.

The Nassauhaven has recently been transformed from an unused harbor basin into a place with water houses and a nature-friendly bank. “Building on the water is the future. As the city grows, many new homes will be needed in the coming years. The space to build in the city is limited. There is still room on the water, ”says Alderman Bas Kurvers.

Building on the water is a challenge, according to the municipality, because there is ebb and flow. “We wanted to gain experience with floating construction and therefore challenged the market to come up with a plan for sustainable water houses,” says the city manager.

The Port Houses move with the tide that goes up and down about 1.5 to two meters twice a day. In addition, the buildings are sustainable, for example, they have solar panels and generate heat via a biomass installation. They also have their own water purification, so they do not have to be connected to the sewer.

Mortgage

Banks see the harbor lofts as homes, which has enabled the new owners to obtain a mortgage. The first residents can move in in a few weeks. In the course of the year, twelve more harbor lofts will be added. “This will make it Rotterdam’s first small-scale floating residential area,” the municipality said.
