‘No evidence that vitamin D helps against corona’ | Inland

Too little useful research is available, according to the council. There are several studies on the health claim, but the results are still awaiting. There is some evidence that vitamin D supplements can help prevent certain other respiratory infections, but they are not related to corona. This also mainly concerns infections in children up to the age of 16, for whom these respiratory infections are usually not serious.

The council sees “this as insufficient reason to advise everyone to take vitamin D supplements to prevent respiratory infections or Covid-19.”

Not enough sunlight

The Health Council says that it is important to take vitamin D supplements for the good bone health of various population groups. These are children up to 4 years old, people who produce too little vitamin D in the skin because they get little sunlight or have dark skin, women who are pregnant, women from 50 years and men from 70 years. These groups have been advised to take extra vitamin D for some time, but not everyone does, the council concludes.

The advisory body further warns that there are now people who, because of the corona pandemic, do not or hardly go outside and therefore “without realizing it now fall under the risk group of people who get too little sunlight.”
