No corps for Amalia: what will she do now?

The princess’s decision comes shortly after a video leaked to the Amsterdamsch Studenten Corps and the Amsterdamsche Vrouwen Studenten Vereeniging. In it, male members said women are “whores” and “sperm buckets.” View the images below:

The question now is whether Amalia can join another association. There is only one corps in Amsterdam, let the National Chamber of Associations (LKvV) know when asked. “In addition to Amsterdam, there are corps in six other cities. This concerns the cities of Delft, Groningen, Leiden, Rotterdam, Utrecht and Wageningen.”

There are only two corpora in Utrecht. This is because the men and women here still have a separate association.

Other options

But there are also other associations than the corps, says the LKvV. “In Amsterdam there are more than 25, varying from culture, sports, conviviality.” There is a rowing club, a rugby club, a debating society and a Christian student association. There are also more general associations in the capital with their own associations, such as student association Cyclades, SVAA Nonmen Non Magnum es and Unitas SA

But is Amalia going there?

Answering that question is speculation, emphasizes Sam Hoevenaar, journalist and maker of a documentary about Amalia. But Amalia was very clear about her plans in Amsterdam: she wants to join an association, with a year club, all the trimmings. Immerse yourself in student life. “She has also been seen in a few Amsterdam bars,” says Hoevenaar, “and in her book, written by Claudia de Breij, and in press interviews at the palace, it appears that she is looking forward to it.”

Necessary Challenges

So if Amalia still wants to celebrate student life in an association, Hoevenaar suspects that this ‘brings the necessary challenges’. With more than 2,700 active members, the Amsterdam Student Corps is the largest student association in Amsterdam and the Netherlands. “She has much more anonymity in such a large group of people than when she joins another, often smaller association. She is not just a member, she is the future queen and always has a security guard with her. Even when she goes to association evening or meeting.”

Her membership would attract a lot of attention, says Hoevenaar. “Not every club and all members are waiting for that. Especially not because Amalia is going to study at a different time than her father: there are phone calls everywhere, videos can be made of everything. And it is mainly about students being able to party. and playing the beast in anonymity. A small club is more awkward for Amalia because she can’t blend in with the crowd there.”

Earlier, Amalia said she definitely wanted to join a sorority, but she also said that her studies would come first:

Justine Marcella, also royal family expert, suspects that Amalia is now not joining an association. “I actually think that she will focus fully on her studies in the coming year,” she says. “She is going to live on her own for the first time, and that also means that for the first time there is no footman around her anymore. That also requires something. She has to do the shopping, cook, stand on her own two feet. I think that already is a very big change for her.”

One of Amalia’s favorite sports is horseback riding, and Amsterdam has beautiful riding schools in the area, such as the Hollandsche Manege, emphasizes Marcella. “Well, she can also ride at home, on her own horse Mojito.”

‘Busy enough with study’

The program that Amalia will do, the bachelor’s degree in Politics, Psychology, Law and Economics (PPLE) at the University of Amsterdam, will ask a lot of her, Marcella suspects. “She will have to work together a lot, so I think she will have the most contact with her fellow students. Or discuss topics she encounters during her studies through study clubs. Without an association, Amalia is still very busy in her first year as a student.”

Another option, Hoevenaar says, is that Amalia chooses to join the corps later. “The RVD actually says nothing about personal decisions of the members of the royal family, unless they have something to do with the public debate. Like now, that is, because the Amsterdam Student Corps has become discredited. That is why the royal family felt compelled to make the decision. to bring it out.”

But, it clearly states that Amalia is not going to join the corps ‘now, at this moment’. Hoevenaar: “That leaves something open for the future.”
