Nintendo: Switch was the last chance (after the Wii U failure)

The success of Nintendo Switch is well known, being the console of the Big N at the top of the hardware charts all over the world (especially the Japanese one, where it has been queen for several months).

Equally well known is the fact that the company’s penultimate home platform, namely Wii U, on the other hand, has not made a dent in the hearts of players, so much so that it is considered almost unanimously as a “failure” for Nintendo.

Now, it is the beloved Reggie Fils-Aimé, former president of Nintendo of America, talking about the Wii U-Switch transition during a stream on Twitch (via NintendoLife) together with Sony’s Jack Tretton and Microsoft’s Robbie Bach.

Fils-Aimé also discussed the poor performance of Wii U and how the House of Mario has tried “everything for everything” with Switch:

People tend to forget, but when Wii U came out the performance was really disappointing, maybe it was the least sold platform, only the Virtual Boy managed to do worse. For the market, the Wii U fell short of expectations dramatically.

Reggie then continued, adding that: “Considering that the only source of income for the company were and are video games, the successor had to be a success so much that Switch continues to be a dynamic platform to this day, managing to sell very well.”

And again, Fils-Aimé continued: “This is something I will always be proud of, along with so many other things, but the Switch was really Nintendo’s last chance and luckily it has become an incredible success.”

In short, if Switch had turned out to be a fiasco, Nintendo would most likely have ended up like SEGA, that is, abandoning the console market forever (perhaps dedicating itself only to the mobile market or pocket platforms). The story apparently had other plans for the Big N.

In fact, remember that for some time we have been talking about the possibility of seeing soon una Switch Pro, with a display OLED better than those currently on the market with Switch and Switch Lite, in addition to the presence of Realtek chips dedicated to 4K UHD.
