The Nintendo Switch: A Console in Rude Health

With 139.36 million units sold as of 31st December 2023, the Nintendo Switch has undoubtedly been a huge success in the gaming industry. Despite the console being at the latter stage of its lifecycle, its popularity remains strong, with more users playing than ever before. Nintendo continues to thrive, with their software sales consistently impressive.

Recent sales milestones include ‘Mario Kart 8 Deluxe’ speeding past 60 million sales [1] and ‘Pokémon Scarlet & Violet’ overtaking ‘Gold & Silver’ to become the third best-selling Pokémon games of all time [2]. Additionally, the relatively new releases ‘Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom’ and ‘Super Mario Bros. Wonder’ have achieved sales of over 20 million and 10 million units respectively [1]. Clearly, the Nintendo Switch remains a dominant force in the gaming market.

The Speculation: ‘Switch 2’ and the Challenges of Transitioning

It’s the same story every time the cycle comes to a close. How do you transition to the next generation without killing the golden goose?

The rumors surrounding a potential ‘Switch 2’ have been steadily circulating, leading many to wonder about the future of the Nintendo Switch. Nintendo President, Shuntaro Furukawa, has addressed the issue, acknowledging the transition challenge. He rightly points out that manufacturing enough units to satisfy the high demand is always a challenge, as other gaming giants, Sony and Microsoft, can confirm [3].

Despite the speculation and rumors, Nintendo has reportedly set ambitious goals to manufacture over 10 million units of an unannounced, upcoming console by March 2025 [3]. However, this does not indicate that ‘Switch 2’ will surpass the OG Switch in terms of sales, even if it is launched this year. Furukawa’s statement about the importance of the current console and its enormous game library in the market is therefore valid [3].

Nintendo’s past experiences with console transitions, such as the bungled handover from Wii to Wii U, have made the company, understandably, cautious this time around. Nintendo has more to lose if ‘Switch 2’ turns out to be a disappointment. Furukawa has expressed confidence in the longevity of the Nintendo Switch, but there is a clear desire from both players and investors for fresh hardware [4].

Nintendo’s Approach: Transitioning Tactfully

It is evident from Furukawa’s recent comments that Nintendo aims to navigate the console transition carefully. By resorting to classic, third-pillar-style commentary, the company seeks to reassure and intrigue both the gaming community and investors. Nintendo’s marketing strategy, cleverly building anticipation around the ‘Switch 2,’ is being crafted meticulously before its eventual unveiling, heightening curiosity about the console’s name and features [5].

Amidst the speculations and rumors, there is a message that can be deciphered clearly – prepare for potential news about new Nintendo hardware in 2024. The gaming community eagerly awaits further information, and we remain on ‘Yellow Alert’ for updates on the fabled ‘Switch 2’ [5].

While some may be fatigued by the constant barrage of rumors, it is necessary to remain patient and keep our shields up, for the transition to the next generation is a pivotal moment for Nintendo and its dedicated fanbase [5].
