Nightclubs stay in the dark

Dance in the dark, vibrate with the crowd, tremble on the decibels … For many, it was a regular meeting, a ritual. The lack is real, says Apolline, an executive in Paris, who walks the track once a week. There is a real expectation for the reopening of the clubs… An expectation which could however continue.

Prime Minister Édouard Philippe spoke of a possible reopening of nightclubs from June 22. Nothing is less sure , tempers Patrick Malvaës, president of the National union of discotheques and places of leisure. If the protocol is too restrictive, it’s not worth it, he explains. Better not to earn money than to open and lose money. President of the Union Chamber of musical, festive and nocturnal places, Aurélien Dubois abounds: Open to maintain a distance, we don’t know how to do it. And if our establishments do not open with a full gauge, they are not profitable …

“Social rapprochement”

How to dance in suitable sanitary conditions? With masks? In boxes? All this breaks the DNA of our establishments, which are there for social rapprochement , laments Aurélien Dubois. The Union of Hotel Trades and Industries (Umih) has published a practical sheet. But these constraints could drive customers away. Gold, we don’t want to reopen under unsuitable security conditions , sums up the union representative.

Dialogue has been initiated with the public authorities. The sector plays big after several difficult years. New exit habits, attacks and social movements have weakened businesses. Umih Nuit president Laurent Lutse estimates that almost 40% of night establishments could permanently lower the curtain. What to do ? For professionals, the answers are simple: the extension of partial unemployment, a support fund, the reduction of VAT… and that insurance companies take their share.

Meanwhile, the nightclubs remain in limbo. In Quimper (Finistère), the Majestic, which can accommodate up to 700 people, will remain closed on June 22, until the health situation improves. In the meantime, its manager, Pascal Ballarini, has had quotes drawn up for gel terminals, thermometers and even a decontamination tunnel. We really want to party again. But there will be a new way of seeing the night after the virus.
