Night on Friday – storm depression “Bianca” sweeps across Austria

In Tyrol, the outermost region was particularly affected, in the state of Salzburg the fire brigades in the northern parts of the country were challenged. In Upper Austria there were storm operations, especially in the Mühlviertel. The districts of Scheibbs and Amstetten were affected in Lower Austria.

“Bianca” swept over Salzburg with wind gusts of 120 km / h. Until the morning hours, fallen trees, above all, had to be removed from streets, cars and houses. The roof of a house in the Salzburg district of Parsch has been damaged for the third time.

The strongest storm speeds were naturally recorded on the mountains: “Bianca” reached up to 163 km / h on the Feuerkogel near Ebensee in Upper Austria, and just under 149 km / h on the Patscherkofel near Innsbruck, announced the ZAMG. But gusts above 110 km / h were also measured in the lowlands, for example in Tannheim in Tyrol at just under 116 or in Upper Austria’s Vöcklabruck at 112 km / h. At Salzburg Airport, the tops reached 104 km / h.

“Nobody was injured. There was no major damage,” said a spokesman for the Salzburg Fire Brigade Association to the APA. The main activity of the emergency services was to remove fallen trees that had blocked traffic routes. The Salzburg local railway in Flachgau was also temporarily shut down because trees had fallen on the overhead line.

Traffic disruption also occurred in neighboring Bavaria. The Rosenheim – Salzburg railway line at Prien had to be closed around 9:50 p.m. due to a tree falling on the overhead line, reported the police headquarters in Upper Bavaria South. A train on a regional train with around 60 passengers was evacuated.

In the Amstetten and Scheibbs districts of Mostviertel, the fire brigade in Lower Austria counted more than 40 missions in the morning hours. Trees lay on streets, in Zeillern in the Amstetten district a power distributor caught fire and set trees on fire. The storm started at 1:00 am, said Philipp Gutlederer of the district command Amstetten. The FF Maria Enzersdorf (Mödling district) also moved out at night. A loose sheet metal part hanging from the roof was removed from an apartment building in the southern part of the city.

The storm depression “Bianca” did not stop at Tirol on Friday night. Above all, the outermost region was affected. The storm caused numerous fire brigade operations in the Reutte district – mainly due to fallen trees. For example, Planseestrasse had to be closed Thursday night due to fallen trees. The Tyrol Command Center also reported fire service operations from communities such as Breitenwang, Forchach or Ehenbichl.

The nightly storm once again gave the Upper Austrian emergency services busy hours: Around 200 fire services were called for a total of around 280 missions, and around 2,600 helpers were sometimes on duty for hours. 15,000 households were without electricity in the meantime, in the morning there were still about 2,500.

The entire federal state was affected, most of the operations were recorded in the districts of Vöcklabruck, Braunau and Ried, according to the fire department’s state warning center. The storm knocked down trees in many places, which then blocked roads or damaged power lines. The latter also caused several fires, transformers caught fire in Windhaag near Freistadt and in Molln. There were initially no reports of injuries.

Netz OÖ reported on power outages around midnight, which briefly affected around 15,000 households in around 60 municipalities. Most of the time, it was only minor damage that was repaired relatively quickly – branches that got caught in power lines and caused a short circuit, or individual twisted trees.
