Nigeria is ravaged by mass kidnappings. It puts the schooling of an entire generation at stake.

The population will double in 30 years. The kidnapping wave threatens to rob schooling of an entire generation of young people.

“Fear of god”, godliness, it says in large white letters on the woman’s black T-shirt. She cries quietly as she sits on a white plastic chair in the sun outside Bethel Baptist High School.

The boarding school in the state of Kaduna in northern Nigeria is empty of students. Instead, the woman with the T-shirt is surrounded by other parents in bottomless despair. They had all made the same choice: to defy the dangers of sending their children to high school.
