Nicaraguan opposition leader sentenced to ten years in prison – Abroad – News – TVNET

A court in the capital Managua sentenced Suaso to five years in prison for “conspiracy to undermine national integrity” and another five for spreading fake news, the Civic Alliance for Justice and Democracy said.

Suaso was “convicted even though he had not committed a crime and had no ties to criminal organizations,” the organization said in a statement.

The 31-year-old oppositionist was active in Masaya, in the south of the country, which was shaken in 2018 by protests of the government’s opponents.

The city declared a revolt against the Ortega administration amid nationwide street protests against the government.

355 people lost their lives when the government suppressed the demonstrations.

Suaso was arrested in 2018, but released in 2019 as part of an agreement reached through the Catholic Church. Several hundred opposition members were released.

However, Suaso was arrested again in May.

According to the estimates of the support organization for political prisoners in Nicaragua, approximately 190 oppositionists have been arrested.

Some 45 opposition figures, including seven presidential candidates, were arrested last year ahead of the presidential election, which Ortega won, benefiting from the absence of strong opponents.

Those arrested were sentenced to up to 13 years in prison for, as the court considered, undermining national security.

Ortega accuses his opponents of trying to oust him from office with the help of the United States, which has imposed sanctions on the leader and his inner circle.
