The opposition-affiliated newspaper La Prensa reports that Nicaraguan Karen Celebertti and her daughter were arrested upon arrival at the airport of the capital Managua and put on a plane back to Mexico.
Celebertti’s home was also reportedly searched. It is not clear what they are accused of. The Nicaraguan government did not respond to questions from the newspaper.
Palacios, 23, won the Miss Universe title on November 18 in El Salvador. Soon after, photos surfaced online showing Palacios at an anti-government protest in 2018. Such demonstrations were banned in the country five years ago. The Miss Universe itself is still on an international promotional tour.
Organization of elections
The organization behind the Miss Universe elections informed the AFP news agency that it is committed to the safety of those involved in the event and the local Miss elections behind it.
“We call on the Nicaraguan government to guarantee their safety and to comply with requests.”
